Articles ( a / an / the )   English

There are two types of articles;

Indefinite Article; "a" and "an" refer  to non - specific nouns.

Definite Articles; "the" refers to specific, certain nouns

* When I say " Give me the pen". The listener easly understands the pen that I want. But If I say "Give a a pen" The listener can give me any pen, because s/he can't easily understands which pen I want. S/he can give me red pen, blue pen, it doesn't matter.

                                       Indefinite Articles "a / an"

We use a or an for singular, countable nouns when the listener doesn't know which one we are talking about.

We use a before a consonat noun and we use an before a vowel noun and it depends on the sound.

a dog an umbrella

a cat an elephant

a hamburger an egg

a university /juːnɪˈvɜːsətiː/ While pronouncing the word the first letter is consonant so we need to use a.

an hour /aʊə(ɹ)/  While pronouncing the word the first letter is vowel so we need to use an.

Definite Article "the"

*We use "the" when the noun is definite or certain.

*We use it to refer something that has already mentioned.

*If both speaker and listener know what is talking about we use "the"

*The is used both singular and plural nouns.

the houses

Do not forget we can use "the" or "a/an" for the same word. It depends on the situation not the word. 

While I was driving to Trabzon I saw a cat and a dog.Surprisingly the cat was chasing the dog. 

* We use the for the unique objects.

the sun, the moon, the wind, the mausoleum.

* We use the to talk about rivers, oceans and seas.

the Missisipi, the Atlantic, the Blacksea

*Before ordinal Numbers

the first, the second, the third, the fourth

* Before Superlatives

the cheapest, the longest, the most beautiful

* Adjectives that refer to whole group

The blind ( All people who are blind)

The Old ( All people who are old)

* Do not use the with the continents

Asia, Europe

*Do not use the while talking about sports.

Football, Basketball, Tennis

*Do not use the before the names of countries but if the country names contain the words kingdom, states, union or republic, we use the.

Turkey ( No article)

Germany( No Article)

The United states of America

The United Kingdom

a / an

a ve an isimlerin önüne getirilir ve bir, herhangi bir anlamındadır.

Eğer bir isim okunuşu dikkate alındığında sessiz harf ile başlarsa a, sesli harfle başlarsa an getirilir.

a dog an umbrella

Genellikle yapılan yanlış ismin önünü a/an getirirken öğrencilerin kelimenin okunuşuna değil de yazılışına bakmasıdır. Dog sessiz bir harfle mi başlıyor. Evet o zaman "a". Elephant sesli bir harfle mi başlıyor o zaman "an". Bu yöntem her zaman tutmaz çünkü İngilizce yazıldığı gibi okunan bir dil değildir

Örnek olarak

a university /juːnɪˈvɜːsətiː/Kelime u harfi ile başlamış ama burada "a" kullanmamız gerekir çünkü kelimeyi telaffuz ederken ağzımızdan çıkan ilk kelime"y" harfidir

an hour /aʊə(ɹ)/    Burada da kelime h harfi ile başlamış ama bizim asıl dikkat etmemiz gereken okunuş olduğu için, kelimenin okunuşuna bakmamız gerekir, burada da ağızdan çıkan ilk kelime "a" yani sesli bir harf olduğu için "hour"dan önce  "an" kullanılması gerekir.

Definite Article "the"

* "the" artikelini belli, bilinen durumlarda kullanıyoruz. Eğer bahsedilen nesne veya isimden daha önceden bahsesilmişse bu durumda "the" artikelini kullanırız.

Unutulmaması gereken nokta "the" veya "a/an" aynı kelime için kullanabiliriz. Bu durum kelimeye göre değişmez bahsedilen duruma göre değişir.

While I was driving to Trabzon I saw a cat and a dog.Surprisingly   the cat was chasing the dog. ( Dün Arabayla Trabzona giderken bir kedi ve bir köpek gördüm, şaşırtıcı bir şekilde, kedi köpeği kovalıyordu)

Bu cümlede ilk olarak a cat ve a dog dedim çünkü kedi ve köpeği ilk kez görüyorum, onlardan ilk kez bahsediyorum ama sonra the cat ve the dog dedim çünkü artık kedi köpeği tanıyorum daha önceden gördüm, beni dinleyen biri the cat and the dog dediğim zaman hangi kediden ve köpekten bahsettiğimi rahatlıkla anlayabilir.

                              "the" artikelinin diğer kullanımları

* Dünyada tek olan nesneler için Kullanırız.

the sun, the moon, the wind, the mausoleum.

* Nehir, Okyanus, deniz isimlerinde kullanırız.

*Sıra sayılarından önce kullanırız
